Whatever your mind can conceive and believe it can achieve." --Napoleon Hill (1883-1970)
"You become what you think about." --Earl Nightingale (1921-1989)
“People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success.” Norman Vincent Peale.
When you look at the essence of what some of the world’s greatest motivational writer’s have written, achieving your desires comes down to what you think. That is the power of the mind to conceive and achieve. Now with the recent popularity of “The Law of Attraction” through the phenomenal success of “The Secret” movies and books with it’s message of attracting what of ever is the focus of your thoughts, you can see there is a weight of belief that our mind and thoughts can have a huge impact on what we experience in our life.
So if we accept these ideas, then by extension it must be a very short trip from here to our stupendous success and amazing life. Simply fill our minds with thoughts of brilliance, prosperity and abundance and wait for our awesome life to appear.
But humans are complex creatures and many of us have struggled and battled through our lives and learnt rules to life that are contrary to this. Therefore it can be difficult to modify all the negative thoughts and paradigms for our lives that we have developed whilst living our lives. So we write a list of positive affirmations. We subscribe to receive motivational sayings on our smart phone every day and surround ourselves pictures of all the things we desire. But alas, we subsequently experience little positive change to our lives. Why?
We decide we want a new house. We’ve clipped out photos from the real estate section of the newspaper of some stunning homes. Pool, location, garden. All the things you want!
But every time you look at these photos, there are some griping little thoughts that have become engrained in our psyche over the years of our life.
“It’s too expensive!”
“I’m never gonna live there.”
“Where am I going to get the money?”
“You’re just kidding yourself. Nothing like that has ever happened to me.”
You need a new car. The latest model. Mmmm! Alloy wheels, leather seats and enough power to tear the skin off your face when accelerating! Wicked!
But there they are! Those nagging little thoughts.
“Where are you going to get a car like that?”
“On your salary! Huh!”
“Your never gonna have a good car!”
“You’re dreaming!”
You want to meet your life partner. There is this really cute/hunky babe/guy at the gym. Go on. Go and make some small talk.
Once again! There are the whispers.
“I can’t do that! They’d never go out with someone like me!”
“I’m not thin enough.”
“They’re just going to say no.”
“It’ll never work.”
You want some money to pay all your bills, the accumulation of which seems never ending!
“I’m always in debt.”
“I’ll never earn enough money.”
“I’ll always be poor.”
“I always struggle with my budget.”
Together all these niggling little self comments actually define who we are, what we have and what we can do. They can have an accumulative affect, severely limiting the possibilities of what might occur in our lives. Most people experience these types of thoughts. A good test is to take a small pad and for one day “watch” these sneaky little thoughts and you will see how pervasive they are.
If we look at these thoughts through the prism of:
"You become what you think about." --Earl Nightingale (1921-1989)
Looking at the thoughts you recorded, what do you think you would become? Nothing very positive you would think. You can also look at the effect of these thoughts on you life by looking at from the other direction.
“What have I created in my life?”
Is your life a series joyful experiences, full abundance and prosperity or is a series of train wrecks full of impending doom, gloom and lack. Is this a good reflection of the type of thoughts that run through your head everyday?
Whether you believe it is because the frame of mind in which you make choices influences the outcome or it is alignment with unseen divine forces, what these thoughts are reflecting is “expectation”.
Negative thoughts reflect an expectation that bad things naturally flow to you and what ever comes to you comes through struggle.
Positive thoughts reflect an expectation that life naturally brings good, positive experiences and there is a flow of joy and happiness.
Another way of exploring this is to look at others that have achieved the pinnacle of success.
The CEO of a company.
A leading actor or performer.
A top sales man.
A champion sportsman.
What do they exude?
Confidence! Confidence is the expectation of success!
The CEO has the conviction of his previous business experience that he can turn a company around and create profits.
An actor or performer gains confidence for a successful performance through experience, training and rehearsal.
A top sales performer gains confidence in his experience to successfully influence peoples buying decision.
A champion sportsman has confidence in his ability from training and experience to take the last and winning shot.
Confidence comes from the expectation that you are going to succeed.
Conversely pessimism and un-happiness are brought upon by the expectation of failure. It is the dreading of the consequence of not achieving your desires. If your expectation is that the things will be difficult then it is most likely that this is what you will experience.
Expectation is the indicator of what our thoughts and beliefs will bring into our lives. This makes monitoring our expectations an incredible dynamic. If we were able to change our expectations, it would be an incredibly powerful tool as we would be able change what we receive in our lives!
